Refugee Legal Assistance Project
Project Background
The Refugee Rights and Legal Assistance Project began when nine refugees were unfairly dismissed from their jobs at a security firm and decided to take legal action to receive compensation and justice. After three and a half years, these individuals won their case and were finally paid out for 12 months. The legal project addresses the lack of legal assistance experienced by refugees and asylum seekers as a violation of basic human rights and seeks justice by pursuing legal compensation. Overall, the project aims to create an environment where workers’ legal rights are recognized and unfair labor practices and discrimination are eradicated.
Since 2014, the ARF has won dozens of cases and continues to receive new cases on a daily basis. This legal project has made a difference in the lives of refugee workers by compensating them for unfair dismissals. By educating refugees on their worker’s rights, this project has also empowered them to share their knowledge and experience with other refugees and workers in their local communities. Thus, in addition to providing legal support, this project has also helped integrate refugees into their communities and change community attitudes towards refugees.
